World premiere of 울산아가씨 찾기, commissioned by the National Theater of Korea. 

- 니키손 ‘울산아가씨 주제에 의한 관현악 - 울산아가씨 찾기’

니키 손은 경상도 민요인 ‘울산 아가씨’를 소재로 새로운 음악적 시도를 선보인다. 니키 손은 어려서 울산에서 유년기를 보냈는데 울산에서 자란 자신과 자신의 어머니, 할머니를 거슬러 올라가는 시대적인 관점에서 울산 아가씨라는 음악적인 모티브를 다양한 방법으로 해석함으로써 각기 다른 세대가 즐기는 민요의 모습을 그려낸다. ‘울산아가씨 찾기’는 단순한 음계와 멜로디 구조를 지닌 원곡을 서양음악의 반음계 화성악을 접목하여 풍성하게 해석한 곡으로, 울산의 아름다운 풍경을 다채로운 악기 편성으로 표현하고 넓고 푸른 바다를 배경으로 살아가는 활기찬 사람들을 표현한 생동감 넘치는 곡이다.

Opera UCLA presents the premiere workshop readings of two new one-act operas by UCLA PhD in Composition candidates. Michel Klein's moving and beautiful Akeidah, based on the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, is paired with Nicky Sohn and Amanda Hollander's brilliantly comic The Emperor's New Clothes.

This performance features the premiere of a new work by Los Angeles based composers and UCLA faculty and students working together with the Max Helfman Institute. David's Quilt is the result of 15 very different composers joining together to tell the story of David through their own artistic lens. The Quilt explores different episodes of David's life, composed in a variety of musical idioms.
