Program Note:

Cynthia was commissioned by my dear friend and wonderful violist, Tonya Burton. This project has been one of the most moving and personal experiences I’ve had the privilege to be part of in years. Cynthia, Tonya’s aunt, sadly passed away from metastatic breast cancer. In preparing for this piece, Tonya and I met with Cynthia’s friends and supporters from her support group. Listening to them share their memories and speak about their journey with Cynthia was incredibly moving. These individuals, who cherished each day and the people in their lives, demonstrated such resilience and strength—it was a powerful reminder of the importance of appreciating what we have. Their stories brought me to tears.

Though I never had the fortune of meeting Cynthia in her life, what I learned from those who knew her painted a picture of an extraordinary woman. Cynthia was an adventurer, a fighter, brave, independent, and resilient. She held on to her dignity and values until her very last day, and I am deeply honored to write a piece that seeks to capture her beautiful spirit.

My approach to this work was different from my recent compositions. Sometimes, I find myself fixated on creating music that impresses other musicians, composers, or listeners, which can lead to overly complicated or ambitious pieces. With Cynthia, I wanted to focus on creating something beautiful and personal, free from the flourishes that I sometimes lean toward.

I am deeply grateful to Tonya for giving me this wonderful opportunity to write in memory of Cynthia, and I hope this piece captures even a small part of the remarkable person that she was.
