Program Note:

For Caio was written for cellist Caio Alves Diniz as part of his project, Impressions in Translation. Five composers were each given a specific Brazilian music genre and tasked with writing a piece inspired by that genre. I was assigned Frevo, a vibrant and energetic musical style from Northern Brazil. Frevo's bright energy and relentless forward motion align perfectly with my own musical preferences, which often emphasize rhythmic vitality and momentum. Caio’s selection of this genre for me was spot on.

This project was more than just a composition task—it was an incredible discovery and learning experience. I delved into a genre that was entirely new to me, and I quickly fell in love with its unique characteristics. The resulting piece is not a strict interpretation of Frevo but rather a blend of my own musical style with the elements of Frevo that resonated with me.

When it came time to choose a title, nothing felt more fitting than For Caio. The piece was not only written for Caio, but also deeply inspired and commissioned by him. None of this would have been possible without his vision and collaboration.
